Citizens for a Safe Community: Who Are We?     Our grass-roots organization was developed in response to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report that listed Rapid City, SD as experiencing the highest rapes per capita in the United States. Not just one year, but this ranking was found in both 1995 and the consecutive study in year 2000!     Our goal is to see a safer community for our families and especially our children. When we looked at the statistics between sexual abuse and the involvement of pornography in all its forms, we sought for ways to improve our city. Mayor Munson appointed a task force that included two city councilmen, a state representative, an AOB owner, a city attorney, and several ordinary citizens to draft ordinances involving zoning and regulation of adult-oriented businesses. The zoning ordinance passed by a 9-1 vote but grand-fathered in existing businesses.     To further encourage a safer environment, the Rapid City Council unanimously passed an ordinance regulating the time, manner, & operation of local “adult” or sexually oriented businesses. Currently this ordinance is on the city-wide ballot for the April 8th election. We support our City Council and the steps they have taken to change our community and we hope that you’ll join us.     Consider the information on our web site, read the statistics for your-self.
